SEOUL, Sept. 27 (Korea Bizwire) – In a groundbreaking test of terahertz (THz) band wireless data transmission within the 6G spectrum, LG Electronics has achieved a remarkable feat, successfully transmitting and receiving data over a distance of 500 meters in an urban environment, setting a new world record.
The impressive results of this achievement were announced on Tuesday, following a two-week collaborative effort between LG Electronics and LG Science Park in Magok, Seoul, from September 11 to September 25.
This accomplishment follows on the heels of another milestone reached by the two companies just a year ago. At the Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz Institute in Berlin, Germany, the two companies demonstrated the successful transmission and reception of 6G wireless signals over a distance of 320 meters outdoors.
The recent test, however, extended its scope to encompass a range of communication scenarios, including connections between buildings, from buildings to ground terminals, and between ground-based terminals. The objective was to comprehensively assess the feasibility and potential applications of 6G technology. LG Electronics firmly believes that this achievement represents a significant stride toward the eventual commercialization of 6G terahertz communication, both indoors and outdoors, within urban environments.
Terahertz wireless transmission and reception technology operates within frequency bands spanning from 100 gigahertz (GHz) to 10 terahertz (THz). This capability enables ultra-high data transmission speeds, reaching up to 1 terabit per second (1Tbps). Such advancements are crucial in the development of 6G mobile communications.
LG Electronics embarked on this journey towards 6G excellence by establishing the LG Electronics-Kaist 6G Research Center in collaboration with KAIST in 2019. This initiative marked the inception of Korea’s first industry-academia research center dedicated to 6G technology.
Subsequently, LG Electronics has been diligently cultivating 6G source technology through cooperative ventures with renowned universities, both domestically and internationally.
