SEOUL, Sept. 13 (Korea Bizwire) — A new facility that creates hydrogen without releasing harmful greenhouse gases has been constructed at the Seongnam Metropolitan Water Purification Plant.
On Wednesday, the Ministry of Environment and the Korea Water Resources Corp. announced that they will hold a ceremony on September 14 to celebrate the completion of this eco-friendly hydrogen production facility located at the Seongnam Metropolitan Water Treatment Plant in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi Province.
This facility generates hydrogen by using electricity from small hydroelectric power plants to split water molecules.
Green hydrogen, in this case, refers to hydrogen that is made without causing any emissions of greenhouse gases during its production.
Small hydropower refers to hydropower generation projects that produce 5 megawatts (MW) of electricity or less.
The Seongnam Metropolitan Water Purification Plant’s green hydrogen production facility was constructed with a total investment of 4.4 billion won and can produce 188 kilograms of hydrogen every day. This amount is sufficient to fuel 40 hydrogen-powered vehicles.
Initially, the hydrogen produced will be transported using trailers to the Galhyeon hydrogen station in Jungwon-gu, Seongnam-si. However, in the near future, a mobile hydrogen station will be set up near the water purification plant. This station will directly supply hydrogen to individual hydrogen vehicles through pipelines, eliminating the need for trailers.
Currently, Hyundai is working on the development of this mobile hydrogen station.
