DL E&C Develops New AI Design Technology

SEOUL, July 14 (Korea Bizwire)Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is increasingly being employed in a wide range of areas in the construction industry.

Major South Korean builder DL E&C Co. recently developed and filed a patent application for AI design technology in which AI automatically produces about 1,000 different types of design drawings for underground parking lots within 30 minutes after analyzing the environment in question.

Once the information on the shape of the area where the parking lots are to be built and the direction and arrangement of apartment buildings is entered, the AI automatically produces thousands of underground parking lot design plans, creating the largest possible number of parking spaces by taking into consideration vehicle movements.

The company said that as a result of applying the newly-developed technology at actual construction sites, the number of parking spaces available increased by more than 5 percent on average.

The AI design also tends to improve the overall quality of construction since it contributes to increasing the usage ratio of precast concrete (PC) for the frame construction of parking lots. Precast concrete is a standardized pre-made concrete product.

DL E&C also noted that in collaboration with a research team from Carnegie Mellon University in the U.S., another AI technology had been developed that selects the arrangement of apartment buildings by taking into consideration floor area ratio, the number of households and the amount of daylight.
